Commentators have reacted angrily to news that a 66-year-old retired member of the clergy has given birth to twins following in-vitro fertilisation treatment in Ukraine.
She gave birth to the twin boys by Caesarian some two weeks ago at the hospital in canton Graubünden's chief town of Chur, where all three are still under observation.
While Switzerland only permits IVF treatment if parents are...

365 Days of Twinipedia - Day 78

Day Seventy-eight of Twinipedia:

Fact #78
During World War II, many Jewish citizens of Europe were subjected to terrible treatment by the Nazi regime.
One well known doctor, Josef Mengele was especially infamous for his cruel treatment of twin children brought to the concentration camp he worked at during the war.  Here is an article on some background information of Mengele and also on some of the twins he experimented on during his medical position at Auschwitz Concentration camp.
This information fascinated, and horrified us and learning the stories of WWII always reminds us of the saying "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it," (1905) by GEORGE SANTAYANA)
And let us hope our knowledge of this time of war helps us from repeating those atrocities again and again.

The notorious doctor of Auschwitz, Josef Mengele, has become an enigma of the twentieth century. Mengele's handsome physical appearance, fastidious dress, and calm demeanor greatly contradicted his attraction to murder and gruesome experiments.

Mengele's seeming omnipresence at the ramp as well as his fascination with twins have incited images of a mad, evil monster. His ability to elude capture had increased his notoriety as well as given him a mystical and devious persona...  Go to

Here is more information on the twins pictured above in words of Irene Guttmann Hizme.  Both twins miraculously survived Mengele's experimentation.

Foreword - Irene and her twin brother Rene were born Renate and Rene Guttmann. The family moved to Prague shortly after the twins' birth, where they were living when the Germans occupied Bohemia and Moravia in March 1939. A few months later, uniformed Germans arrested their father. Decades later, Irene and Rene learned that he was killed at the Auschwitz camp in December 1941. Irene, Rene, and their mother were deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto, and later to the Auschwitz camp. At Auschwitz, the twins were separated and subjected to medical experiments. Irene and Rene remained separated for some time after their liberation from Auschwitz. The group Rescue Children brought Irene to the United States in 1947, where she was reunited with Rene in 1950.

Personal Account: “I, of course, have, um, unfortunately a lot of memories of, um, of the hospital and, um, the doctor's office. It, I seem to recall spending a great deal of time, um, there. And also being in the hospital and being very sick. And, um, I know one time, when I went to the doctor's office, that they took blood from me and, it was extremely painful because it was from the left side of my neck. That's a strange thing to remember. I also remember having blood taken out of my finger, but that wasn't quite so bad. And I also remember having to sit, um, very still for long periods to be measured and, or weighed, or in X rays. I rem...I remember X rays, X rays. Um...and injections. I remember injections. And then I'd be sick. Because then I, I'd be in this hospital. And I remember having a high fever, because I know they were taking my temperature, somebody was. Um, I really got to hate doctors. I, I got to be afraid. I used, I was terribly scared of doctors, I still am. They're a nightmare. Hospitals are out of the question and illness is unacceptable.”

The Passion for Skiing will make you do Crazy things - Love this!
We love to ski. Both of our crazy families hit the mountains each season to shoosh down the slopes and enjoy glorious outdoors in the winter time. It is great exercise, so much fun for parents and kids alike and some of the best family time both of our families have ever shared. You'd be amazed how much you can talk about or how many laughs you can have as a family on a 7 minute ski lift ride over and over throughout the day. Just priceless stuff!!

We saw this picture on line today and just had to share it. Talk about passion for the sport...or should we say sports since it combines skiing with horseback riding. We just loved this image and wanted to share it with you.

Book Review By MamaLuvsBooks:
"Tired Of My Bath" by, Dicy McCullough is a cute story about John Allen who is a little boy that is tired of taking baths. He tells his mom that he doesn't want to take a bath and instead of making him she gives him the best lesson of all; she tells him to do what he wants and he can deal with consequences. I love that lesson! I need to do that more with my own kids.
He goes without his bath and discovers what happens.......he stinks! You'll have to read this adorable story to find out what John Allen does!

Twin sisters confront Alaska’s Iditarod
The Daily Chris Strauss
UPDATED MAR 3, 2012 7:38 PM ET

Twins Kristy and Anna Berington will compete in the Iditarod.

After consecutive days of racing on three hours sleep in bitter temperatures that can dip lower than 50-below, it’s understandable if some Iditarod competitors find themselves susceptible to double vision.

In this year’s annual dog sled race, which officially begins Sunday in Anchorage, racers and spectators will actually be seeing double thanks to a set of 28-year-old identical twins...

The Twin Buzz - World News about Multiples

Ever wanted an identical twin? A clone to do your chores? If you were a coral embryo, you could
just break in two and make yourself a body double, new research suggests.

Coral embryos, which are complex marine animals with differentiated cell layers and tissues,
are able to reorganize their bodies, even if they've broken in half, to form anew. This means that
when even a gentle wave comes along and a coral embryo is damaged, it just ends up turning into
two smaller, identical twins...

Day Seventy-seven of Twinipedia:

Fact #77

Twins account for over 90 per cent of multiple births.  So Triplets, quads and more account for only 10% of multiples births.  It seems more since the media is so crazed to cover Super multiple births but looks like twins still dominate in the world of multiples!

365 Days of Twinipedia - Day 76

Day Seventy-six of Twinipedia:

Fact #76
We are Irish. Pretty much 100% Irish. We come from Kellehers', Hayes', and Buckleys'...Now those are some Irish names. And we have heard the saying "Irish Twins" our whole lives since our older brother and sister are considered Irish Twins. I thought it would be fun to look up what exactly the definition of Irish Twins is and here is what I found.

  • At http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Irish_twins, the term is said to be used more generally to refer to any siblings born close together, particularly within the same calendar year.   The term is not used in Ireland.
    • Irish Twins is defined as a term originally used to mock the fertility of Irish Catholic families. It references a perception about families of Irish Catholics who may not use birth control (and thus may have children in quicker succession)  Irish twins in Latin is plurale tantum
  • At http://multiples.about.com/od/glossary/g/irishtwins.htm the term is defined as a word used to describe two children born to the same mother in the same calendar year or within twelve months of each other. The phrase originated as a derogatory term associated with Irish immigration to the United States and England in the 1800's. The implication was that large groups of close-in-age siblings were the result of uneducated, poor Irish Catholic families' lack of birth control as well as self-control.  In modern use, the term is not intended as an insult, but rather a description of siblings born close together. Irish twins are not actually twins and they are not the same as having twins, which are defined as two siblings born from the same gestation.  Also Known As: Irish triplets when three children are born to the same mother within three years.  Examples: A mother gives birth to one baby in January of 2007 and another child in December of the same year. Or, alternatively, a mother births a child in August of 2007, becomes pregnant again in October, and gives birth to another child in July of 2008.
  • At http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-iri1.htm, they share that What it means to be Irish Twins is easy enough to explain. It refers to siblings born in the same calendar year, or otherwise less than twelve months apart. It’s clearly a deeply derogatory comment about the stereotypical fecundity (and lack of contraception) of Irish Catholic families. It’s probably twentieth-century, but I can find little evidence that would help to tie it down (it may be relevant that it isn’t listed in the 1984 edition of Eric Partridge’s Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English). So far as I can tell from the places I’ve found it, all online, it’s primarily an American expression; it’s also known in Britain, but it doesn’t often find its way into print, no doubt because it is considered offensive.
