Last week, we asked our ONE members to tweet the women on Forbes’ “20 Youngest Power Women in Africa” list and thank them for their amazing contributions to the continent. Here’s a slideshow of some of the tweets we spotted over the week:
A few people shared their motives behind tweeting the women:
“I tweeted each woman listed. Felt they each deserved their own congrats message for all the hard work they are doing to make their country a better place for all citizens. What amazing, inspiring young women…the kind of women I hope my daughters admire and look up to someday.” -Cathy Costantino
“This time I decided to write a tweet to Ory Okolloh, @KenyanPundit. The reason was very simple: she was able to create a communication space for Africa. In other words, she gave to individuals a chance of telling their stories without any kind of manipulations, nor interventions. For it, she deserves my highest respect.” -Ellen Ramirez
“I wrote to Saran because clean water really resonated with me, but I plan to tweet to ALL of them. Thank you for this beautiful action that puts me personally in touch with women so far away who care about the same things I do! I LOVE THIS!!!” -Anonymous
It’s still not too late to show your support to these women, so if you want to give them a shout out, you can find their Twitter handles here. Thank you to everyone who participated in this ONE act — you guys helped make these women feel special!

#SUNDAYSAYINGS

Sunday Sayings-

For all our friends, family, loved ones, who fight the fight everyday including the cyclists from yesterday's ride who rode to support pancreatic cancer research and to honor those we love and lost.

"You gain strength, courage and confidence by every exposure in which you really stop to look fear in the face.  You must do the things you think you cannot do."

Today I write in support of my husband: via Cathy

My husband is riding a 200 mile bike ride this weekend. He is doing these 200 miles in 1 day. He will ride from West Warwick, RI to Thornton, NH. He is riding in honor of a friend of his who lost her battle with Pancreatic Cancer a year ago. He is also riding in order to raise money for The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, (www.pancan.org). This organization helps to support Pancreatic Cancer patients as well as their families. It also helps to educate the public about Pancreatic Cancer and advocates at the government level to push legislators to pass more bills/laws that increase funding for Pancreatic Cancer (this form of cancer has the highest mortality rate but receives the least funding).

I am telling you about this today because I am hoping you will consider supporting my husband's hard work and dedication to this cause. He wants to see Pancreatic Cancer research increased and early detection tests be created so that this slow growing cancer can be caught and treated far sooner than it is able to be today.
Below, I have included a t.v. news clip about the ride and Eric's efforts to fight Pancreatic Cancer. I hope you will check this out and  learn some additional background on Eric, PanCan and the ride.
Again , please consider any size donation to support his cause and thanks so very, very, VERY, much in advance for your consideration.

Online donations can be made to http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/karenpettydoublecentury

Checks can be made out to:
The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and sent to:
70 Rip Van Winkle Circle, Warwick, RI 02886

And To my husband:

Eric -
I love you hon and I am so proud of your efforts to make this ride a reality each year. I hope you have a safe, successful ride and I hope that maybe, just maybe, you might have a little fun along the way. Thanks for being such an incredible role-model for our girls. You are our hero!
Semper Fi my love!
and All my Love always -
Cathy

Health Check: Biking for pancreatic cancer

Eric Costantino has been an avid bicyclist for many years.
"You know probably when I was 15, I started to ride with my father," he said. "I've been riding ever since."
Costantino doesn't race, but he says cycling is a way for him to stay fit.
"I love being out on the road," he said.
In a few days, he'll be out on the open road for about 200 miles -- in one day.
"From West Warwick to Thornton, New Hampshire," Costantino said.
He's riding in honor and memory of Karen Petty, a neighbor in West Warwick.
"I spent almost every day after school there and she was like a second mother to me. The whole family basically was an extended family of mine," Costantino said.
Last year, Petty lost her battle with pancreatic cancer.
So to honor her and raise money in the fight for a cure, Costantino embarked on a 200-mile ride from West Warwick, Petty's home, to Thornton, New Hampshire, where the Pettys have a vacation home.
"The end of the ride is really kind of a mean stretch. The last 40 miles are tough, and it comes at a bad time in the ride when I'm ready to relax," Costantino said.
But he's doing it again, this time with two buddies.
Costantino, a former Marine, said it's the hardest physical thing he's ever done.
And he does it to "give a little credence to how important it is that we fight this disease."
Costantino's group will begin the long trek Saturday at 3 a.m.
He said it should take about 14 hours, and that there will be a support vehicle along for the ride to make sure they are fed, hydrated and safe.

Taken by Dennis, the SIL of  blogger mom Becky Jane from http://riseaboveyourlimits.blogspot.com
She let me know that this was actually taken by her daughter's husband who is a fireman. Her daughter is  Sarah.

Remembering Texas Today -
9/14/11 Texas Wildfires Coming Under Control -  As armies of firefighters descend on Texas to fight back massive brush fires that have destroyed more than 1,500 homes in the past week, the sensitive work of helping the victims deal with loss is swinging into high gear.
