Without any fanfare, Ebony Bains walked into the Kaiser Santa Clara hospital last month to check her blood pressure a week before the birth of her twins.
That's where the memory of a veteran nurse intervened. While she was taking Bains' vitals, nurse Sue Sitler remarked that in 1981 she had been part of the medical team that spent 99 days caring for premature twin babies with the last name Bains.
Those preemies were Ebony and her brother, James. And that was 30 years ago...
