If I Had My Life To Live Over

by Erma Bombeck

The following was written by the late Erma Bombeck
after she found out she had a fatal disease.

If I had my life to live over, I would have talked less and listened more.
I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained and the sofa faded.

I would have eaten the popcorn in the 'good' living room and worried much less about the dirt when someone wanted to light a fire in the fireplace.

I would have taken the time to listen to my grandfather ramble about his youth.

I would never have insisted the car windows be rolled up on a summer day because my hair had just been teased and sprayed.

I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose before it melted in storage.

I would have sat on the lawn with my children and not worried about grass stains.

I would have cried and laughed less while watching television - and more while watching life.

I would have shared more of the responsibility carried by my husband.

I would have gone to bed when I was sick instead of pretending the earth would go into a holding pattern if I weren't there for the day.

I would never have bought anything just because it was practical, wouldn't show soil or was guaranteed to last a lifetime.

Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy, I'd have cherished every moment and realized that the wonderment growing inside me was the only chance in life to assist God in a miracle.

When my kids kissed me impetuously, I would never have said, "Later. Now go get washed up for dinner."

There would have been more "I love you's".. More "I'm sorrys" ...

But mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute... look at it and really see it ... live it...and never give it back.

This is my daily 'touchstone".  I have it posted on my refidgerator and I read it almost daily.  It INSPIRES me to live well and to live NOW.  And it reminds me of what IS IMPORTANCE in life and what to l"let go".  I went through my third pregnancy really marveling in  the joy of it all and that was due partially to Mrs. Bombeck's words.  And I have become very good at having friends over, even when my home is not perfect.

  1. @twinswithtots We may not have it all together but together we have it all." I love this quote b/c yes we live a crazy/chaotic life but I wouldn't trade it for anything! My family is perfect for me!

  2. "Courage is being scared to death...but saddling up anyway!"... John Wayne.
This is one of my favorites for many reasons. I used this when I launched 9 Kid Fitness (http://9kidfitness.com). I love to share ideas, stories, and encouragement with others, but to do it online was a little scary! But I saddled up and I'm so glad I did.

I also think about this quote when I think about my twin sister, Susan, who for 17 years lived in Seattle, WA, while I lived in North Carolina. While it was very scary to move her family of seven across the country, she saddled up anyway. Now she lives two miles from me.

As a mother, this quote is also appropriate. With nine children, I know only too well how scary it can be to raise children today. You would think I would have it down, but each child is so different, that it never gets easier. But we (all mothers) saddle up anyway.

Finally, I thought about this quote this morning at mass as I prayed for the families of those brave Navy SEALS who died yesterday in Afghanistan. They saddled up again and again.

You have a great website, thanks for saddling up! I will continue to visit...good luck! Whitney

  3. Whitney...Now that is an inspiring quote...and when you linked it to the Seal tragedy, I got chills. My husband was a Marine who flew in helicopters for 6 years. A big crash like what happened in afgahn. (not shot down of course) . happened to co-workers of his in his squadron during training. They lost 19 KIDS. Got a call 6 a.m.morning of the crash to be told that I would hear about it in the news and that my husband was ok. He kept flying after that...Talk about "saddling up" Thanks for the inpiration.

  5. "Close friends...contribute to our personal pleasure, making the music sound sweeter, the wine taste richer, the laughter ring louder because they are there." --Judith Viorst

This quote speaks for itself. I thought about it today because tomorrow is my 23rd. wedding anniversary. I married, Bud, my best friend when we were 44. Although I'd been single and independent before we met, Bud really made my already perfect life richer!
Thanks for hosting this blog! I'll be a regular.
